The city of Baltimore is the largest city in the state of Maryland both in terms of size and population. It is the 30th most populous city in the United States and has around 280 neighborhoods. It is an independent city, which means it is independent of any county. It is a rare situation, only three independent cities exist in the U.S. outside the state of Virginia. It is a thriving coastal city and quite nautical in nature with a rich maritime history, gorgeous ocean views and countless waterfront activities. It is also a historic city with strong ties to the development of our nation. It has  numerous pre-WWII structures making it unique in terms of architecture and atmosphere.  It is also a fairly well educated town with over 28% of all adults holding four-year degrees or more, well above the national average of about 21%. English is the primary written and spoken language in the city, followed by Spanish and French. It is a diverse city in terms of both race and ethnicity.  The city has a humid subtropical climate and it features residential areas, historic districts, industrial areas and urban sprawl.

The independent city spans approximately 92.1 square miles, 80.9 square miles of land and 11.1 square miles of water. It has a mixed workforce of white, blue and no-collar workers. It is a lower-middle income city compared to state economic standards and upper-middle income relative to federal economic standards. In 2016, the population of Baltimore was 614.664. By 2017, the population was estimated at 617,734. The current approximate population density is 7,590 people per square mile. In 2016, the median household income was $47,350 and the per capita income was $29,449. In the same year, the median house or condo value in the city was approximately 155,500, the mean price on all housing  units was $221,829 and current median gross rent in the city is approximately 1,187.

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes since the Mesolithic period. European settlement began with the arrival of the first ship at St. Clemens Island in the mid-1600s. The city is named after Cecil Calvert the 2nd Baron of Baltimore. The city of Baltimore was officially founded in 1729, but was not officially incorporated until 1796. Baltimore was declared and independent city in 1851. Today it has a mayor/council form of city government. The city motto has a few motto’s, ” The Greatest City in America”, “Get In On It” and “Believe.” It has also earned two nicknames “Charm City” and “B-More.”

Public education is provided by the schools of the Baltimore City Public School System. Long commutes are common, but the city has an excellent public transportation system. The city is also cyclist and pedestrian friendly having everything you need just down the street. The city also features over 4,900 acres of parkland. Among it’s most popular parks are Federal Hill Park, Druid Hill Park, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Site and more. It is a city of history, progress, skyscrapers and dreams.
